Unregulated Child Care Providers
In Virginia, a person may provide childcare in their home for five or fewer children without being regulated by the state government. However, no family day home shall care for more than four children under the age of two, including the provider’s own children and children who reside in the home, unless the family day home is licensed or voluntarily registered. A family day home is not required to be licensed if all the children in the home are grandchildren. These providers are known as unregulated providers (or "family, friends, and neighbors"). An unregulated provider may be someone who provides an early education setting or a friend or relative, such as a grandmother who provides care for her grandchild.
As an unregulated provider, you may be eligible to receive a variety of services from ChildSavers through grant-funded programs. Examples of these programs include, but are not limited to:
- Visits from ChildSavers staff members and the KIDCare® STAR van to provide health and safety items, resources and toys for you to keep. Also, you may borrow additional activities, toys, and other items to be rotated on a monthly basis.
- Training in areas such as health and safety, developmentally appropriate practices, child behavior modification, and fun and educational activities you can do with the children in your care.
